Automobilista 2 VR Review (2026): The King of Performance?

Quick Verdict: Automobilista 2 is the single best “all-in-one” VR racing package available today, offering incredible performance, terrifying weather effects, and a massive variety of cars—from Rental Karts to classic F1.

If KartKraft is a laser-focused tool, Automobilista 2 (AMS2) is a massive sandbox. Built on the “Madness Engine” (the same tech behind the legendary Project CARS 2), it is widely considered the best-optimized VR racing game on the market.

For KartVR readers, this is a critical title because it is one of the few serious simulators that actually cares about Karting. It features fully simulated 125cc Shifter Karts, GX390 Rentals, and Superkarts, along with proper karting tracks like Buskerud and Ortona.

KartVR Rating: 9.0 / 10 (Best VR Performance)

The VR Experience: Butter Smooth

The biggest barrier to entry for VR sim racing is usually hardware. Games like Assetto Corsa Competizione require a NASA supercomputer to run clearly. AMS2 is different.

You can run this game on a mid-range PC (e.g., RTX 3060) and still get a solid 90 FPS with high settings. The clarity is unmatched; the dashboard dials are readable, the distant corners are sharp, and the sense of speed is excellent.

The “Wow” Factor: Rain You haven’t truly raced in VR until you have driven AMS2 in a thunderstorm. Watching rain droplets stream sideways across your helmet visor while hydroplaning at 150mph is one of the most immersive experiences in gaming history.

The Karts: A Hidden Gem

Most people buy AMS2 for the cars, but the Karting content is surprisingly deep.

  • Rental Karts: Perfect for learning racecraft. They are slow, grip-heavy, and rely on maintaining momentum.

  • Shifter Karts: These are absolute rockets. In VR, looking over your shoulder to see the engine screaming next to your ear is intense.

  • Physics: While slightly more forgiving than KartKraft, the physics update in late 2025 (v1.6+) made the tires feel much more connected to the road. You can feel the grip limit progressively, making it easier to catch a slide.

Content Variety

This is the “buffet” of sim racing.

  • Historical Content: Want to drive a 1990s Formula 1 car on the historic 1991 layout of Interlagos? You can.

  • Track List: It has one of the most unique track lists in sim racing, focusing on obscure South American tracks that are incredibly flowy and fun to drive in VR.

  • AI Offline Racing: Unlike KartKraft, the AI here is excellent. You can set up a full championship against computer opponents, and they will actually defend, overtake, and make mistakes.

Conclusion: Should You Buy It?

Yes. This should be the first sim you install on a new VR rig. It works out of the box, looks incredible, and offers thousands of hours of content across every discipline of motorsport.

If you find KartKraft too difficult or “broken,” AMS2 is the polished, complete alternative you are looking for.
